The new provisions on bereavement leave enter into force on 25 July 2021

On 15 July 2021, the Act extending and easing the taking of bereavement leave in the event of the death of a partner or child was published in the Belgian State Gazette.

This Act enters into force on 25 July 2021.

Our Newsflash of 9 July 2021 provided an overview of the most important changes brought about by the bill extending bereavement leave in the event of the death of a partner or child and easing the taking of bereavement leave. This bill was passed by Parliament on 17 June 2021.

The Act was published in the Belgian State Gazette on 15 July 2021 and will enter into force 10 days later, on 25 July 2021.

Action point

As of 25 July 2021, the situations in which your employees are entitled to bereavement leave will be extended, as will the length of the leave in some cases. The time when bereavement leave can be taken will also be more flexible.
