Newsflash
Mobility and immigration
Since 1 January 2011 the European social security rules as laid down in Regulation (EC) 883/2004 also apply to third-country nationals who move within the European Union.
This modification was established by Regulation (EC) 1231/2010 of 24 November 2010.
However:
- in the United Kingdom Regulation (EEC) 1408/71 remains applicable to third-country nationals;
- in Denmark the extension of Regulation (EC) 883/2004 as well as the extension of Regulation (EEC) 1408/71 do not apply to third-country nationals;
- furthermore Regulation (EEC) 1408/71 remains applicable in relation to Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
There are many differences between the rules of Regulation (EC) 883/2004 and those of Regulation (EEC) 1408/71. For an overview, we refer to our newsflash on this subject of 5 May 2010.
