Thierry Claeys has been active in labour and employment law for more than 35 years. He developed the so-called "Claeys formula" for calculating the period of notice to which a dismissed white-collar employee is entitled. Labour law practitioners in Belgium use widely this formula which is based on a statistical analysis of court decisions. The formula is also often used as a reference for collective bargaining agreements concluded on the occasion of company restructurings.
Thierry Claeys is the editorial secretary of the JTT and co-author of the series Het verbreken van de arbeidsovereenkomst (Breach of the employment contract), and De sociale verkiezingen (Company elections). With another Claeys & Engels partner, Pieter Smedts, he publishes Handboek Ontslag (Dismissal Manual), and Licenciement & Démission (Severance and Resignation).
Thierry Claeys has a doctor of laws from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (UCL). He is a member of the General Assembly of the Orde van Vlaamse Balies (from 1986 until 1989 and as from September 2005).
